Woods

    In Chin-fu Shih's Woodcarving Workshop, one can see a spectacular display of woods. They are hung on walls, collected y Master Shih over the years. Each time he finishes a work, he will keep a small piece of wood and write its name, chord and diametral planes. There are over one hundred kinds of woods for display.

 A number of woods

Cinnamomum kanehirae

1. There is no obvious difference between the sapwood and the heartwood. The sapwood is light tawny, while the heartwood is dark reddish tawny.

2. Along the wood grain, there is generally beautiful flower pattern. The newly cut surface has a strong and long-lasting odor of camphora.

3. Due to its interwoven and rough wood grain, the wood is easy for processing, anticorrosive, and suitable for engraving.

Taxus chinensis

1. The sapwood is yellowish white, while the heartwood is from reddish tawny to dark reddish tawny.

2. It has straight or oblique grain and fine texture.

3. It is glossy, is easy for processing, anticorrosive, and suitable for engraving.

Chamaecyparis taiwanensis


1. The heartwood is light tawny, while the sapwood is light yellow, red, or white

2. The wood has straight grain, fine texture, and aromatic scent.
ˇ@

3. It is conducive for processing. The polished surface is smooth. It is good for painting and decoration and anticorrosive.

Formosan michelia

1. The sapwood is light yellowish gray, while the heartwood is from reddish tawny to dark yellow.

2. It has obvious rings, straight wood grain, and fine and glossy texture.

3. It is good for wood making, painting and decoration, gluing, and nailing and moderate for planning and processing.

Zelkova serrata

1. The sapwood is light tawny, while the heartwood is tawny or reddish tawny.

2. It has straight wood grain and moderate texture. It is heavy, hard, and resistant to impact.

 3. The string section presents beautiful and fine serrated patterns, suitable for engraving.

   0rmosia henryi prain
 
1. The sapwood is light tawny, while the heartwood is from tawny to purplish tawny with dark stripes.

2. It has straight wood grain, coarse texture, and detailed, clear, and well-arranged ripple patterns.

3. It is fragrant, anticorrosive, and suitable for prayer table, flooring, and decoration.

   

Chamaecyparis formosensis

1. The sapwood is yellowish gray, while the heartwood is from red, yellow to tawny. It is a bit redder than chamaecyparis taiwanensis.

2. It is aromatic. It has less suncrack than beautiful wave-like patterns on tangential section.

3. It has straight wood grain and even and fine texture. It is easy for processing, anticorrosive, suitable for engraving.

   

Tsuga chinensis var. formosana

1. The wood is yellowish white or yellowish gray with narrow rings which are slightly wavy and not neat.

2. It has straight wood grain and coarse texture. It is not anticorrosive, but easy for processing and suitable for engraving.

Calocedrus formosana

1. The sapwood is light tawny, while the heartwood is tawny and green. Its rings are not obvious.

2. It has straight wood grain, even and fine texture, and beautiful flower patterns.

3. It has aromatic odor and glossy surface. It is anticorrosive. Its size has good stability, suitable for engraving.

Boxwood


1. It is bright tawny or yellow and glossy. There is no obvious difference between the sapwood and the heartwood.

2. It grows slowly. A newly cut surface has a slightly smell of soil. A cutting surface is very glossy. After painting, it has good brightness, suitable for engraving.

Mersawa
ˇ@

1. There is no obvious difference between the sapwood and the heartwood. The heartwood is tawny with pink tone or strips.

2. Newly cut transection has exudation of red or pink resin.

3. It has high value. Its place of origin is southeast Asia.

   

 Phoebe zhennan

1. The sapwood is from yellowish white to light red, yellow, or white, while the heartwood is from tawny to reddish-tawny.

2. The rings are not obvious or slightly distinct.

3. It has straight or oblique wood grain and coarse texture. It is not anticorrosive, but suitable for engraving.
