Step 1: Selection
of materials
Master Shih first selected a piece of cinnamomum
kanehirae and then used an electric saw to saw an
appropriate size. He taught us that one should pay
attention to the wood texture and quality and check if
there was any scar or split. |
Step
2: Design drawing
Master Shih took out a piece of paper and began to
compose. With over 30 years of skills, he finished a
vivid drawing in an instant and asked us to focus on
proportion and radian. |

Step 3:
Beating a base
Master Shih first attached the paper to the wood, then
used a chisel and a mallet to beat slowly to make a
rough base. The key point was the degree of force which
could best prove the skills of a craftsman. |
Step 4:
Carving
Master Shih attentively carved patterns with a triangle
knife. Various chisels were laid near him. We were
impressed by his smooth skills. Since it took a long
time to carve, the rest part would be left for our next
visit. |

Step 5:
Colored drawing
Master Shih happened to make a batch of wooden chairs,
so we could see him painting. Master Shih dipped his
brush in the paint and painted directly without scratch.
We all admired the vivid flowers, birds, and animals. |
Step 6:
Painting
Painting is to protect the wood, so Master Shih IC used
two degree IC undercoat to evenly brush on the work. Due
to the strong smells, one should complete this step
outdoor with good ventilation. |
